Constable Andrew Thomas McKnight By Ken Brewer

Transferred there in 1861, District Constable Andrew Thomas McKnight was Papakuras first policeman. Born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1837 he had been a Waikato farmer before donning the uniform of the Auckland Provincial Constabulary. He later married Kate Edwards Shepherd of Waiuku at Whatawhata on 27 February 1877 and they raised 7 children, 4 girls and 3 boys all of whom were born at Papakura. His time in the town was to be rather turbulent with the onset of the lands wars in the district and also dramatic on the law enforcement front, resulting in a sudden end to his career.
