NCO Rank Insignia - By Ken Brewer

NCO Rank Insignia

Two earlier articles centred on cap badges worn over the years and this time we look at the variety of Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) insignia worn by the New Zealand Police since its creation in 1886. Due to publication in black and white, the colours of each are described in the illustrations text.

Sergeant Major WT Mason photographed in Timaru, was the last man to hold that rank and here he displays the four inverted chevrons capped by a Victorian style Crown of his rank. He retired in 1910. Whilst these appear large they were greatly reduced in size from earlier versions. Photo courtesy of The Iron Hand in the VelvetGlove by Richard S Hill.
