Otago Central Rail Trail
The Otago Central Rail Trail is a year-round recreational facility, designed for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. It is a public reserve and can be walked or ridden in either direction. The Rail Trail was developed by the Department of Conservation in Otago with funding support from the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust.
The Department of Conservation saw the defunct railway’s potential for outdoors enthusiasts, and acquired the line in 1993. Six years, and over $850,000 were then spent upgrading the closed railway for its current use, which involved strengthening the trail’s 68 bridges, several over 100m in length, and furnishing them with hand rails for safety. A ride along the trail on a summers day from Alexandra to Omakau can be exhausting work - take some water. Enjoy the sunshine.
